Supreme Court Weighs in on Wetlands and Muddies the Waters of the United States

On May 25, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States decided Sackett v. EPA, No. 21-454, and issued its ruling narrowing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) authority to regulate the nation’s wetlands and waterways. The ruling ended a 15-year battle in favor of Michael and Chantell Sackett, who wanted to build a house on an empty lot near a large lake and wanted to fill in some wetland areas. -
Federal Government Issues Guidance About Artificial Intelligence Use in HR Decisions

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued Guidance on May 18, 2023, to remind employers that Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems which are used in human resources decisions need to be closely monitored to avoid violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. In addition, federal statutes prohibit discrimination against people aged 40 or older and people with disabilities. The use of AI is being analyzed and explored as part of the EEOC’s “Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Fairness Initiative” to ensure that these protected classes of people are not negatively affected.
