New NLRB Joint Employer Standard and Suggestions on Avoiding Joint Employer Status

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on October 25, 2023, issued the final rule setting out the Joint Employer Standard under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which will go into effect on December 26, 2023. The Joint Employer Standard determines when a company is considered an employer of workers who may not have been hired by the company and are not on the company payroll. -
Two Sides North America Calls Out ADP, Inc. Over Paperless Environmental Claims

Two Sides North America has challenged claims by ADP, Inc, a payroll service provider for businesses, that paperless electronic communications “saves trees”. PRINTING United Alliance is a member of Two Sides North America, a not-for-profit organization working to battle myths about the harmful impacts of paper and printing upon the environment. Misinformation about printing on paper damages the reputation of print by obscuring its sustainability and social value. -

The Race to Regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI)

On October 30, on the eve of the world’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Summit in the U.K., President Biden signed an ambitious, 111-page Executive Order (EO) on safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence. A White House fact sheet on the order can be found here. The United States is attempting to position itself as a leader in the race to regulate AI. The order seeks to strike a balance between incentivizing innovation and guarding against its dangers. -
House Approves Israel Aid in First Major Test for New Speaker

On November 3, the House passed a $14.3 billion Republican-led aid package to Israel. The bill passed 226-196, with 12 Democrats voting for it and two Republicans voting against. It faces little chance of becoming law, however, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) saying he won't take it up and the White House threatening to veto it.
