On November 15, 2024, Nevada became the sixth state to adopt a regulation aimed at protecting workers from heat-related illnesses. This comes after a record-breaking summer that saw Las Vegas reach 120°F and a steady increase of heat-related illness complaints across the state in recent years. During calendar year 2021 there were 344 complaints which climbed to 467 complaints filed through September 2024.

Contributing over $100 billion annually and employing 380,000 workers, the industry’s ties to the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector further underscore its importance, with the latter adding $2.5 trillion to GDP and over 22 million jobs. Advocacy has emphasized these contributions to secure supportive policies from Congress and the administration.

In a highly anticipated decision, a federal district court in Texas ruled on Friday, November 15, 2024 that the soon-to-be effective federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Overtime Rule cannot be implemented. The district court held that the Department of Labor (DOL) exceeded its authority by raising the “threshold” salary that employees must be paid before they qualify as being exempt from receiving overtime wages.
