PRINTING United Alliance is grateful to serve its members who make such significant impacts on the printing industry. Through our Member Spotlights, we continue to recognize our members, and help our community get to know their peers better, both professionally and personally. The following is a Q&A with Jeremy Underhill, VP of Sales at MGX.
Please provide a brief history of your company and its core mission.
Founded in 1998 by Doug and Sharon Watson, MGX began as Masterpiece Graphix, born from a shared passion for the print and graphic design industries. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a problem-solving mindset, the company set out to provide toll coating services for HP Indigo users within the label and packaging industry. Over time, MGX evolved—expanding our team, enhancing our coating expertise, and shifting our focus to the commercial sheetfed market, where we serve as a leading provider of synthetic and specialty substrate solutions for digital and offset print technologies.

Can you share any new tools or platforms that MGX is particularly excited about?
We have recently launched a major revision and expansion of our Interactive Compatibility Guide (ICG), which enables Print Solutions Providers to quickly identify materials that are compatible based on the press technology they are working with. Access the MGX Interactive Compatibility Guide here.
We are currently working to develop and launch a Press Settings extension of our ICG early next year, which will help operators set up media profiles for our products, ensuring success and consistent performance.
What would you say have been your company’s biggest accomplishments and challenges?
One of our biggest accomplishments is successfully pivoting into the commercial print segment of the industry and establishing key partnerships within the merchant community. Going back 12 years, we had very little presence in commercial print, and our business model was completely different. Changing our entire business model and the products we produced was no small feat, nor was establishing distribution partners as a small, unknown mill amongst much larger, entrenched mills.
Our greatest challenge right now is managing growth and continuing to scale our business without losing the hallmarks of what got us here. We have experienced incredible growth over the last 5 years, and we are making significant investments in our business that will expand capacity, enhance quality, and drive product innovation.
Why did you decide to join the Alliance? What resources do you plan to or have already utilized through your membership?
MGX joined PRINTING United Alliance because it serves as a key resource for the print industry. As a supplier of specialty substrates, we benefit from being listed in the supplier directory and value the exposure it provides. We also attend PRINTING United Expo every year, which offers important opportunities to connect with industry professionals, showcase our products, and stay informed on market trends. The Alliance supports our goal of staying aligned with the evolving needs of the print industry.
