To what extent is expanded gamut printing being used today?

It is primarily being used by a select group of packaging printers and is not common for conventional offset and flexo presswork. Users reap the advantages of reproducing spot colors with a 6+-unit press and using a standard set of CMYK plus two or three extra inks, thus avoiding the purchase of special inks and, critically, the time to switch them in and out on press. It requires specialized software and prepress and press operator expertise and discipline that most printers don't have or see the need for. Ever-improving technology will possibly negate the current challenges and much work is being carried out in this area. The use of expanded gamut printing is developed in wide-format inkjet printing. Many manufacturers offer additional colors such as orange, red, violet, and/or green inks in conjunction with CMYK so users can reproduce saturated spot colors otherwise out of reach.
