Summary:

Newspapers are seeking improved process ink colors capable of producing a more powerful and effective visual image to the reader. The American Newspaper Publishers Association Research Institute, Inc., has undertaken a study of the possibilities of finding improved colors, utilizing techniques that are fully described in this paper. Consideration is given to both the ICI and the Preucil systems of color notation, and the final choice explained. Over 100 ink samples have been examined and percent efficiency, percent greyness, and percent hue error determined for each. It is concluded that better process color inks for newspaper printing can be selected which will produce a more comprehensive color gamut, require minimum masking, and be within a reasonable price structure.
