Summary:

The introduction will give a review of why experiments should be designed and will mention a few principles used in the design of experiments. This discussion will then develop some reasons why we should use designed experiments in the graphic arts. It will be illustrated by two problems for which experiments were designed. One of these will illustrate how ranking methods can be used with an analysis of variance to assign causes to variation in the appearance of printed material.
