Summary:

Coating technology and printing research have developed hand-in-hand in the paper industry, but current coating techniques have gone beyond the print researcher's ability to determine the ultimate imaging potential of a paper surface. This has caused the paper-oriented Graphic Arts researcher to broaden the area of his investigations and involved him in new problems. One of the more baffling new problems has been the discovery of a negative correlation between ink film thickness and print density that seems definitely associated with unidentified characteristics of both paper and ink.
