Summary:

A computer program designed to handle the variety of formats, including text, tables, and formula, encountered in the typesetting of scientific manuscripts for journal publication is now in the production stage. Manuscripts are now being processed for primary publications whereby the preparation of a machine-readable record of the manuscript provides a base for subsequent phases of the overall system of handling chemical information. The process starts with the preparation of a punched paper tape, coded in a typesetter's oriented language called MACRO, as the input to the computer and results in a punched paper tape coded to operate a typesetting device. Dual purposes are assigned to specific codes: (1) originates a series of type- setting instructions stored within the computer, and (2) serves as a flag for the recall of specific portions of the manuscript, either for secondary processing or retrieval purposes.
