The adjustment of the shades of offset process inks is described, with the view in mind of accomplishing color correction with simple single-stage (positive) masking. The requirements of such a set of balanced offset process inks is outlined. Three series of such balanced process inks have been developed, and are now available. One of these sets of inks apparently in balance based on measurements with a Welch Densichron was checked with a recording spectrophotometer, and also be actual photographic masking. The effect of printing a set of balanced offset process inks on uncoated paper is discussed, including hue shifts, change in cleanliness, and change in the balance for masking.
