Summary:

A set of color separations for process color reproduction must be screened to satisfy the gray balance requirement and to produce the correct tone scale. Both of these requirements depend not only on the selection of inks, paper, and plates, but also on press variables which vary from shop to shop, from press to press, and even from job to job. In designing a color reproduction system, all of these factors must be taken into consideration. This paper describes a simplified method of finding the desirable screening curves for correct gray balance and tone reproduction in one operation.
