Summary:

The LogEscan System is a large format laser scanning unit which can be operated in a stand-alone or facsimile mode for the generation of Lasermasks and lithographic plates or proofs from original paste-up copy. The Lasermask can be used to prepare duplicate plates, using conventional techniques. This paper discusses the role of the LogEscan System in a newspaper environment where simplicity of operation and low cost can be achieved for papers requiring several duplicate plates. The scanning system and consumables are described by reconstructing the design trade-offs (based on cost, scanning efficiency, geometric fidelity, human factors, and probability of technical success) which led to the design of a thermal imaging system characterized by a stationary drum scanner having an electropneumatic scanning element and a digital data system.
