Large Image Files in Publishing Systems

Summary:

The problems of large (1-100MB) image files have a clear influence on practically all technical solutions in publishing systems. This is true not only in the choice of processor, bus, or memory capacities but also in coding, display, input, interfacing and output. We can also say that all types of systems from DTP software and workstations to CEPS are trying to reach adequate solutions. How this is done in present practical systems and product development is discussed. Future trends are anticipated for both hardware and software. Short response times, easy operation and transparent user interfaces are some of the final criteria for the feasibility of all solutions. Increasing quality and image resolution stress the need of optimized work flow and representation.
