VTT/GRA has installed the dynamics and main features of the image formation of the offset process in a multiprocessor system in the PRINTSIM simulator. When simulating the various components of a printing process, the processor/program architecture becomes very significant, if the simulation is supposed to give the impression of real time. On the other hand, rather advanced image processing is possible in the PC environment today, and the tools to develop so-called expert systems are also available. A description of the PROOFSIM system has been given. three parallel modules are used to process the dynamics and image formation, the control system, and the expert system of the heatset/newspaper offset process. Modern PC technology offers both the hardware and software to make these applications possible.
