Summary:
During the past decade, the necessity of matching reproduction characteristics to press requirements has become more widely accepted. Test forms to measure the relevant press parameters are now readily available and well understood. In order to make use of the data obtained, it is essential that scanners can be easily programmed with the appropriate information. At the same time, it is essential that they also provide the optimum reproduction of the original and that by combining these two requirements, they produce the separations required for the press. The appropriate mathematical models to achieve both requirements and how these are employed in the modern digital scanners will be discussed.
