Measurement of Cylinder Deflection Including Finite Element Analysis

Hallmark Cards is studying nip pressures in large sheetfed offset presses. The paper presents some of the methods used to determine cylinder deflections during a study of the factors which affect loading of the blanket against the sheet. The unit forces which act on the sheet during were correlated against other factors which control the quality of the print. Three methods were employed in order to derive the unit loading: empirical testing of prototype cylinder sections; selecting mathematical models which bracket the values of expected deflection; and a finite element solution utilizing computer modeling.
