Summary:

Holography has been examined from the viewpoint of use with security documents, that is, with the intention of using it to guarantee the authenticity of documents. Security document philosophy is based on two important principles: anti-falsification, and anti-counterfeiting. Documents that often call for security identification include passports, driving licenses, money papers, and bank cards. What currently is used to solve the problems of counterfeiting and falsification in many areas is inadequate. A security hologram presents specific technical features that would make counterfeiting impossible. Testing has been done on transfer foil (3D) and holographic embossed (2D/3D - 3D/2D/3D kinetic) holograms for resistance to wear, folding, water, and other stresses. While the cost of requirements will weigh on the cost of the product, it is felt that it is necessary to foresee a cost increase if real security level improvement is to be achieved.
