The paper evaluates the state of the present digital picture processing in newspaper page production. The problems, such as the vast memory capacity needed, are explained. Continuous-tone picture storing is proposed instead of halftone storing. Proper integration of digital pictures into the newspaper page production is discussed. Further, the costs of digital storage are calculated. The cost savings attained by the elimination of the pasteup and page film are estimated.
