Summary:

A general theory of color reproduction is presented using functional block diagrams. Three mathematical requirements are formulated. Specific applications to the graphic arts are then discussed. An improved criterion for the selection of color separation filters is introduced. The similarity between halftone images and continuous tone dye images is shown. The use of photographic masking for color lithography is vindicated. Some practical ideas about photographic masking are presented.
