Technologies and systems currently used for composing large type in the graphic arts industry either use wet chemical processing or require considerable manual effort and time. The new technology embodied in the 3M Brand PROMAT Letter Compositor preserves the advantages of a photo composition system, but eliminates chemical processing. Furthermore, it makes composed messages instantly visible to the operator to aid in laying out headlines. The new technology is a heat imaging system which employs the very short duration of high energy xenon flash to produce high resolution heat images on a heat activatable media.
