Fire Prevention Plan


All workplaces are required to have a Fire Prevention Plan. The purpose of this plan, while it may be obvious, is to prevent a fire from occurring in the workplace and to describe the procedure to follow if a fire does happen to occur. A fire prevention plan must be in physical writing, be kept in the workplace, and be made available to all employees for review. An employer with 10 or fewer employees does not need to develop a written program but still needs to communicate the plan orally to employees. PRINTING United Alliance recommends the development of a written program for all workplaces.

Written Prevention Plan

PRINTING United Alliance template for an Emergency Action Plan includes both emergency evacuation and fire prevention plan requirements. At a minimum, your fire prevention plan must include the following:

  • A list of all major fire hazards, proper handling and storage procedures for hazardous materials, potential ignition sources and their control, and the type of fire protection equipment necessary to control each major hazard.
  • Procedures to control accumulations of flammable and combustible waste materials.
  • Procedures for regular maintenance of safeguards installed on heat-producing equipment to prevent the accidental ignition of combustible materials.
  • The name or job title of employees responsible for maintaining equipment to prevent or control sources of ignition or fires.
  • The name or job title of employees responsible for the control of fuel source hazards.


An employer must ensure each employee is familiar with the procedures within the fire prevention plan. If an employee is designated to assist with evacuation or the fighting of a fire if the occasion arises, they must be trained accordingly.
