About the Presenters

Don Hutcheson, President, HutchColor, LLC

With over 40 years of experience in photography, design, prepress, printing, and color science, Don Hutcheson has pioneered many techniques we now take for granted, like RGB workflows, soft proofing, extended-gamut printing, and digital proofing. In 1995 he started the world's first color management consultancy, HutchColor, LLC, to bring the concept of ICC color management to professional graphic users.

Today he continues to train the world's top printers, publishers, agencies, photographers, and designers through private consulting and public conferences. In 2006 as chair of the IDEAlliance GRACoL committee, Don used his own Proof-to-Press calibration method (now known as "G7(r)") to produce the current GRACoL and SWOP data sets. Since then G7 has made standardized printing and proofing easier and more accessible to thousands of printers and print buyers world-wide.

Joe Marin, Senior Vice President, Education and Training, PRINTING United Alliance

Joe Marin is Senior Vice President, Education and Training at PRINTING United Alliance and is passionate about helping people learn, advance, and grow. He has spent the majority of his career in the printing industry and is one of the leading voices on digital technologies, including all things related to succeeding in a digital print environment. Joe developed and manages the iLearning Center eLearning platform--the industry's go-to resource for online education--and has authored many of the courses found there. While managing learning and education is his primary job function by day, Joe also can be found racing at autocross events or attending classic car shows.

Ray Weiss, Director of Digital Print Programs, PRINTING United Alliance

Ray Weiss, Director of Digital Print Programs for PRINTING United Alliance, joined the Association in 2014. He provides solutions and technical information on digital printing as well as digital equipment, materials, and vendor referrals. He oversees several workshops along with the association's digital equipment evaluation program. Ray is project manager for both the PDAA Certification program and Digital Color Professional certification program and is an instructor for the Color Management Boot Camps. Ray is a regular contributor to the association's Journal and won the 2016 Swormstedt Award for Best in Class writing in the Digital Printing category. His 25+ year career in the graphics industry has spanned owning his own prepress and offset business to digital wide format sales, training, support, and service. Ray has extensive experience in color management and worked closely with the Smithsonian Institution to implement a color managed workflow in their Exhibits department.

Ben Starr, Director of Technology, Color Management Group

Ben Starr is a Director of Technology for Color Management Group, with a BS in Printing Management from Western Michigan University. For over 10 years he has provided color and workflow installation and training services for many leading creative agencies, pre-media, and print production facilities. Ben has also had several opportunities to work in color management research and development, and some of the findings from this research has been published in various industry publications. Additionally, Ben's research has yielded new efficiencies at the companies he's worked for. Ben has also spent several years leading pre-media departments for traditional and digital print.

Birgit Plautz, Manager of Technical Services, GMG Americas

Birgit Plautz is Manager of Technical Services for GMG Americas, a German-headquartered company providing color management solutions. She represents GMG at industry events and organizations throughout North and Latin America. Before moving to the U.S., she spent five years in Technical Development at GMG headquarters. Ms. Plautz started her career in the printing industry with seven years as a Media Designer in a global acting prepress house, where she also focused on packaging and catalog creations. Her following time in R&D for Heidelberg Printing Machines and her Masters work in Printing Technologies from Stuttgart Media University rounded out her education and provided a strong spring-board into digital color management.

Dan Gillespie, Director of Technical Services, Alder Color Solutions

Dan began his professional career in the newspaper industry, where he honed my skills and became proficient in desktop publishing, scanning, and color separation/reproduction for cold-set web printing. Dan then went to work for a national graphic arts reseller, GE Richards Graphic Supplies as an application specialist, training clients in graphics related software. Dan went on to become the only color specialist on staff, installing scanners and proofing systems and teaching people color management around the country.

In 1999, Dan started his own business, ColorGeek Inc., solving client's color workflow problems for photographers, printers, publishers, and converters. In 2010, Dan went to work for Color Management Distribution where I was the Director of Technical Services until November 2018. In December of 2018 he became the Director of Technical Services for Alder Technology, where he was responsible for professional color services, nationwide.

Dan is also an avid professional photographer and enjoys expressing his creative side for a short list of choice clients and projects. Dan's goal is to make a great living doing what he loves for and with good people, helping companies realize the benefits of digital imaging, color management, process control and workflow automation.
