Job Summary

Cuts multiple layers of fabric into parts for articles such as tote bags, garments, hats, stuffed toys, and accessories by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Spreads fabric on table preparatory to cutting.
  • Arranges patterns on top ply of fabric and marks outline of pattern on fabric with chalk or another marker.
  • Inserts base of cutter under layers of fabric, starts cutter, and guides cutter around edges of pattern or template or along markings on fabric to cut out parts.
  • Checks the cut and bundle sheet for number of trim items needed.
  • Sets aside certain dye lots as required for matching to special cuts or styles.
  • Cuts required trim for cut order.
  • Drills holes through layers of fabric or cuts notches in edges of parts with scissors or electric cutter to mark parts for assembly.
  • Places remaining trim stock on trim shelves.
  • Maintains running inventory of trim stock.
  • Sharpens blade with abrasive stone or belt attached to cutter as quality of cut indicates dull blade.
  • Changes cutter blades.
  • Separates cutting waste according to color and/or type of material.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Carries out conduct and leadership responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, safety, and applicable laws.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to one-on-one and small group situations to management, outside resources, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standard situations.
