What are the key technology trends in the printing industry?

A major trend continues to be high-speed inkjet. The amount of money being invested in R&D and the pace of development is striking. This year the Xerox(tm) Baltoro(tm) HF Inkjet Press was honored with an InterTech Technology Award for offering state-of-the-art inkjet technology in a small sheetfed format (14.33x20-in.) and space-saving design that many printers will be able to afford. Another award went to the HP PageWide Web Press T240 HD for the integration of a web coater, giving commercial printers the ability to inkjet print and coat inline. On the packaging front, an award went to the Uteco Sapphire EVO M Press, using Kodak Stream continuous inkjet technology. This is the fastest digital solution for flexible packaging, making it a suitable alternative to flexo for short- to medium-run jobs. Since 2017, about one-third of InterTech Technology Awards have gone to inkjet-related press technology. Other trends are a focus on automating steps in production workflows, including the use of Cloud-based technology, and the start of incorporating artificial intelligence into technology solutions.
