Animal glues were used commonly before World War II. Today synthetic adhesives are used, including latex, vinyl, and acrylic. They are strong while providing good gloss and disperse easily though the mixture. If the coated stock is to be used with a toner digital press, the fuser roller will apply significant heat to the sheet and the coating adhesives must not melt, soften, or omit odors. Coated stocks should specify they are toner/laser compatible.
