SGIA?s Gary Jones to Teach Hazardous Waste Bootcamp

For Immediate Release October 10, 2018 Contact: Kate Achelpohl, SGIA 703.359.1364 kate@sgia.org Fairfax, Virginia – The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association’s (SGIA) Gary Jones, Director of Environmental, Health and Safety Affairs, will lead a new Hazardous Waste Bootcamp training program at the Printing & Graphics Association Mid-Atlantic (PGAMA) headquarters in Columbia, Maryland. The workshop will be held Thursday, November 8, 10:00 am–2:00 pm, and admission is $99 for the first person registered and $79 for each additional person.  Jones noted that hazardous waste regulations are often not fully understood, leading to improper management of materials. This workshop is designed to teach printers in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia how to avoid mishandling hazardous waste that could lead to administrative or legal problems and fines. “Every printing organization generates hazardous waste, and with the changes in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, you want to be sure you are handling waste properly,” said Jones. “This workshop will arm you with the most relevant and up-to-date knowledge needed to meet requirements that will keep your organization out of trouble.” Jones will discuss a variety of successful waste management strategies as well as the most recent EPA regulations. The workshop will cover:

• Hazardous waste identification
• Proper collection and management of hazardous waste
• Understanding generator classification and management requirements
• Differences between satellite and central accumulation areas
• Marking, labeling and management requirements for containers
• Proper management of solvent-contaminated shop towels
• Proper management of universal wastes and used oils
• Preparing for and responding to emergencies.

“We will teach you how to identify hazardous waste and will show you how to manage it. Violators have been charged with large penalties that could have been easily avoided, and this workshop will ensure you avoid that risk,” said Jones.
