Penalty Amounts Adjusted for 2017

Effective January 13, 2017, the maximum penalties for citations issued by OSHA have been once again adjusted for inflation under the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act of 1990. This annual adjustment allows OSHA to increase its penalties issued for violations. Such increases were not adjusted since 1990 and the first round of increases permitted under the act occurred in August of 2016. The change in penalty amounts for 2017 is shown below:

  • Other-Than-Serious    
    • 2016 Penalties: $12,471    
    • 2017 Penalties: $12,675
  • Serious    
    • 2016 Penalties: $12,471

  • Willful    
    • 2016 Penalties: $124,709    
    • 2017 Penalties: $126,749
  • Repeat

  • Failure-to-Abate
