National Standards Institute (ANSI), is proud to announce the newest ISO standard now available, ISO 24585-1: 2023.
Multispectral imaging is an image capture technology with more than three channels or wavelengths, conventionally RGB. ISO 24585-1 focuses on multispectral image capture of surfaces with spatially varying color, using specified wavelengths across the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared spectrums.
Rather than relying on visual assessment, or averaging of measurements, modern technologies with increased capabilities found in lighting and sensor technologies, the use of multispectral imaging devices continues to grow. With this, there is a need to have multispectral measurement system attributes documented and standardized to achieve a similar solid foundation so that multispectral images can reliably be compared and leveraged across technology and applications.
Additionally, ISO 13655 specifies choices for the measurement and computation of the color of single printed patches providing an established foundation for consistent color communication within the industry. While D50-based measurements, with M0, M1, and M2 are defined, certain applications may still leverage D65.
Multispectral imaging overcomes difficulties found often with lamination, decoration, and materials found across offset, letterpress, flexo, gravure, screen, and digital print to perform digital color transformations effectively for color accuracy down to the pixel beyond conventional RBG imaging also to collect further colorimetric critical data for CMYK and additional process color channels such as OGV. ISO 24585-1: 2023 is aligned with some aspects of ISO 13655, to on a broader level, establish common definitions across light sources, color measurement and color computation.
Subsequent parts of the ISO 24585 specification will define measurement comparison, tristimulus data, reporting and additional areas of multispectral colorimetric usage.
As the use of multi-spectral imaging grows, expect the industry to adopt multiple levels of this type of evaluation to become standard across programs such as Idealliance’s G7(R) Master Qualification and System Certification, and other print buyer/brand validation, quality control technology, and color management as a whole.
