Product of the Year Jewel TrophyRay Weiss, Director of Digital Programs, and Johnny Shell, Vice President of Print Technology & Training at the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) joined Deborah Corn on Podcasts from the Printerverse to discuss the 2018 Product of the Year competition. In the conversation, Weiss and Shell detailed the competition and awards, and highlighted some of this year’s winners.

Weiss has administered the competition since 2014 and has constantly worked to evolve and improve the program. The main purpose of the competition is to recognize the products that are helping to move the printing industry forward, and as such, Weiss works to make the competition as relevant as possible, broadening the range of categories and recognizing a more unique set of industry-leading products.


Product of the Year GalleryWeiss and Shell also discussed the judging process for this year’s competition, in which eight printers and distributors with expert knowledge in specific category areas were brought to SGIA’s facility to judge both output and non-output products based on an objective criteria to see how well the they perform.

The discussion also entails insight into some of the 68 winning products, and why manufacturers are proud of receiving the coveted SGIA Product of the Year jewel.
