The continuing high number and severity of amputation incidents within the manufacturing sector of industry—of which the printing industry is a part—coupled with the high number of machine guarding and lockout/tagout citations, has led OSHA to conclude that not enough is being done to prevent these types of incidents. Although the printing industry has always been required to meet the specific OSHA regulations identified under the Amputations NEP program, printers should realize that they face a greater probability for inspection by OSHA because of the revised targeting criteria. The sections of the NEP applicable to printers are addressed within this guide.
