Spi Binding Co., Inc.
Spi Binding Co., Inc., located in Darlington, Indiana, has provided high quality wire spiral, wire-o, plastic coil, and plastic comb mechanically bound products to the printing industry for the past 26 years. The company purchases raw filament and forms plastic coil in-house to match the requirements of each project. Equipped with both high-speed automatic equipment, as well as hand fed equipment,. Spi Binding prides itself on being able to meet its customers’ delivery dates and meet or exceed their quality standards. We utilize both automatic and semi-automatic binding equipment to provide the company with a binding capacity of approximately 10,000 books per day in either wire-o or plastic coil based on thickness of the project.
Other services include multi-hole drilling, manufacture of plain and mylar index tabs, spot glueing, transfer taping, eyeletting, and stitching of non-standard size products. Spi Binding has the ability to apply calendar tins to single or multi-page pieces up to a 36” wide calendar tin. Combination binding has also become popular with multi-page wire-o documents having a front cover with tinning applied for wall hanging.
Spi Binding employs approximately 50 staff members. We cross train our staff to operate various pieces of production equipment, who are also flexible to work different shift hours to meet production needs. From folding and gathering, to binding and shrink wrapping, quality checks are completed at each operation to insure the highest standards in quality assurance.
Knowledgeable estimators and customer service representatives are available at all times to answer questions and assist customers with their projects. From estimating, to production and shipment of orders, customer service tracks each project. Engineering personnel are also available to assist with projects that may require special applications or unusual die configurations.
What products and services does your company provide?
Spi Binding provides mechanical binding services. This includes wire spiral, wire-o, plastic coil, plastic comb and calendar tinning. Folding, gathering, trimming, punching, and binding are all processed on high-speed equipment. Additional options would include inserts, fold-outs, semi-concealed binding, wire-o bound books glued-in to turned edge covers, tab cutting, plain and mylar, index tabs, edge reinforcing; drilling, and shrink wrapping. Calendar tinning and individual rolling of calendars, maps, charts, etc. can be provided on products up to 36” across the tinned edge.
What are some of the projects that your company has undertaken recently?
Spi Binding recently completed a 250,000 count job which was wire spiral bound with folded tabs, and shrink wrapped in 5’s. This project utilized a specialty die which provided a notch at the top of the tab sheets. This process allows the tabs to fold in from the top and not interfere with the wire binding. This die was designed by Spi Binding and custom built to our specifications.
How many years have you been in the industry?
Spi Binding has enjoyed twenty six successful years of providing mechanical binding services to the printing industry. Our growth has been primarily by word of mouth and recommendations, while we are still servicing our initial customers. Much of the growth we have experienced, has been brought forth by the growth of the printers with whom we partner, as well as the referrals that we have received from our loyal customer base.
Name the most pressing challenge or issue you are currently facing
The most difficult challenge Spi Binding is currently experiencing is finding and hiring the right people with the desire to learn and grow with the company. Although the unemployment rate in Montgomery County, Indiana is higher than it has been in the past, many people who have lost their jobs, are currently content to draw unemployment benefits and are not looking for jobs. We work with several placement companies within a 25-mile radius to continue to try to locate employees with a desire to learn, high hand-eye coordination and aptitude, and a desire to locate with a growing company that offers competitive wages and a full benefit package.
