Danny Rich, Ph.D. Receives Prestigious Robert F. Reed Technology Medal

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, January 14, 2013—Printing Industries of America is pleased to announce Danny C. Rich, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2013 Robert F. Reed Technology Medal, recognizing outstanding engineers, scientists, inventors, and researchers in the graphic communications industry. He has an outstanding record of technical and scientific accomplishments, and his contributions to the graphic arts industry span 28 years.

Established in 1974, the Reed Technology Medal perpetuates the memory of Robert F. Reed (1905–1973), “Dean of Lithography,” whose contributions to the understanding of lithographic processes and materials were perhaps the most significant of his time. Nominations were judged by a small committee of past Reed Medal recipients and representatives of Printing Industries of America’s Ben Franklin Honor Society.

Danny C. Rich, Ph.D., Manager of Color Research Laboratory, SunChemical Corporation, Carlstadt, New Jersey, has made long-term contributions in the development of color tools that improve SunChemical’s customer productivity.

He is the primary inventor and developer of a patented system and method for disseminating color ink and colorant formulas, combined with a system and method for managing electronic transmission of color data; developer of an automated ink color matching of solids and tones; and developer of UV-VIS ATR short path-length spectroscopy to determine the strength of printing inks.

He holds 15 patents, contributed to 4 books, has 18 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 10 publications, including solicited book reviews. Rich has participated in numerous lectures, seminars, and similar educational activities and has presented his findings at 48 technical conferences and workshops.

This year’s Reed Award will be presented Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at The 65th Annual Technical Conference TAGA.
