PitStop removing more than printer marks
We have watched folders through PitStop Server and through a regular version of PitStop in Acrobat 9 that are set up to automatically remove printer marks from client-submitted files. Most of the time it works just fine, but on occasion the watched folders will remove more than just the printer marks. Sometimes portions of images or shaded areas will be removed as well. If we catch it we can run the original file through an alternate preflight that doesn't remove the printer marks and it will be fine. Does anyone know what would cause this to happen and ideally how to keep PitStop from removing non-printer-mark items during the remove printer marks step?

Print-ready pdfs - shadows around linked .psd files
Hello!
We are having the occasional issue with our print-ready .pdf files (that we generate out of Illustrator). Whenever the .ai file contains a linked .psd, we end up with a small grayish CMYK "shadow" where the .psd art ends and the vector art begins (in the .pdf only):
Screen Shot 2012-05-16 at 12.34.48 PM.png
We can't figure out how to get rid of this in the Illustrator .pdf job options.
If we save the linked .psd file as a .tif, then the problem goes away.
Screen Shot 2012-05-16 at 12.35.04 PM.png
It's not simply a matter of zooming in and out on the .pdf--this is showing up on our plates when we output the files.
We'd like to avoid having to resave all our thousands of .psd links and relink them all in our Illustrator files--has anyone else experienced this issue?
Thanks for any feedback! Attached Images

Card Printing Infographic
Just wanted to know what you guys think of our new infographic. I know it's a bit simple, but we were trying to go for that "dummies manual" style, keeping it as simple as possible. Any feedback will be appreciated. Plastic Card Printing How-To - Cardprinting.us

Fonts messed up in GUI XMF Workflw
Hello all, I hope someone reconize the next problem I have since I have a new Mac (and decided to clean up my font-collection)
Sometimes the fonts in the interface gets messed up, it seems that the Workflow uses another font than it did before and it's very disturbing. I attached two images where you can see the problem. There is a temporary fix and that is to empty the font cache, I use the freeware application Onyx for that, but the problem reoccurs after a while.
My system fonts seems to be OK, re-installing did not help and I cannot find where other font-settings for the XMF are. Our supplier of XMF didn't knew the answer, so that's why I give it a try here. Thanks for any help or suggestions!
Mac 10.6.8
2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
12 Gb 1066 Mhz
XMF Workflow version 4.1.0.6 Attached Images

The Perfect Lithographic Ink - Not Yet Born - Year 2012
I touched upon this in another thread, but would enjoy a little feedback to the concept as we are approaching much more complex galaxies, such as the NanoSphere!
Help me out Gordo, Erik, Al. Anyone please comment.
See gentlemen, litho can be dramatically improved, by changing of the ink formula based on given coverage or take off for a given print form. This coverage factor is an everchanging variable.
The rigors that are put on an ink in very light to very heavy coverage are dramatically different. The idea would be to keep the same replenishment rate for each ink, regardless of coverage. More study would have to be done to find the ideal ink film thickness, say for each process color. Then, based on total percent covearge for that ink, that print form, the strength of that ink would be adjusted to accomodate the coverage. This would be ideal. If the inks and extender portion are formulated properly, you force constant replenishment based on take off. This would allow your ink to run at a constant state of proper micro emulsification, without adjustment to the dampeners. Ink stability in the train, ink setting and drying would be improved and much more predictable.
The design needed on press to achieve this is reachable. If you have 4 Full Strength process inks dispensed from pumps, that would be the ink used for a full coverage, 100% solid sheet. With the inks, you would have a let down extender also designed to be pumped and mixed for each changing print form. Knowing the exact total coverage for each color, the ink would be pumped and mixed with the proper amount of let down extender to maintain constant ink film thickness and constant replenishment. This is an ideal situation to take litho closer to science, although it shall always remain an art.
COVERAGE, is the most important factor and the one thing that presently cannot be controlled. The example of an ink system as just described, would control a major variable not yet properly explored or developed.
Your thoughts are encouraged. Thank you. D

Sonora Thermal Plate from Kodak
Morning All,
we have Nexpress and have been offered a very good deal from Kodak to move our current plates from a low chem system to one using their process less plates, so no messing round with the processor.
I wanted to know if anyone was using them? Do they present any issues with the press (developing on the press) i know they used to be a problem, but Kodak say these new ones are the bees knees.
Its a great deal, and i'd love to upgrade our workflow and put in a thermal system, but its a big move, we use around 2500 - 3000 plates a month at the mo.

Esko Automation Engine and organization of client native files on prepress server
Hi, we are looking over Esko Automation Engine Workflow and have a question about organizing client native files. We currently all (7 staff) work out of a single folder called the Design WIP (work in progress). Every month, we move any project folder older than 30 days from the Design WIP and move to another storage unit that just holds client archives. We have an indexing application that we search to find archived jobs on the archive storage unit.
My question is, it looks like the Esko Automation Engine workflow might need the paths to our native project folders/files to stay in one place forever judging from the client application prepress would use to register there files to the system. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, would it be best to purchase a couple large storage servers and just start organizing our job by client folders and just have a single system that has scalable storage? Thanks!

Prepress Workflow Shopping
We are a digital and offset printing company and have EFI Pace MIS, two HP Indigo 3000 series presses (Dedicated HP RIP Box), iGen4 (Freeflow), Oce VarioPrint (digital B/W), two Xerox Nuvera 120s (digital B/W), Rampage (Win7Pro 64bit), 28" Komori 5-color offset, PressTek 2340 RIP, 2 small format spot-color offset, HP Scitex 98", Kongsburg CAD cutting table and 7 prepress staff running 2 shifts.
We are looking over Esko prepress automation engine software with dedicated RIP, color processing- full package. We have Rampage, but only use for 28" 5-color offset workflow and sometimes spot-color offset.
The goal is to not increase prepress staff as we grow. Given our diverse printing business and we will work on any printing order from $10 to $100,000, does anyone have any advise on Esko vs Rampage vs Printergy or any other workflow automation tools? Seems like Printergy and Ramage are popular choices, but I'm not sure I see many people chatting about Esko in digital printing companies, seems like packaging and labels might be their main market. Thanks!
